Grey

Grey

Abandoned houses are always grey.

Brick, wood, stone,

doesn’t matter.

Grey wraps around them, down to the foundations,

masking remnants of childish laughter,

obscuring murmured conversations

over coffee or tea.

Grey washes away passion,

wipes up all evidence of desire.

Memories vanished,

dreams extinguished,

all signs that someone loved there,

gone.

You have captured the mood and tone of grey very well. When I first saw my classroom (an outdoor unit), I was depressed by its greyness. At first. I cannot change the color on the outside. It would cost me too much, and I don't think I'm allowed to do that, since it is school property. But even if they did give me permission, and even if they did pay for the paint, I'd be the one painting it. No thank you, don't like to paint that much! So my classroom exterior is a dull, washed-out, worn down looking grey. Ugh! But inside, all is full of life. You can see a picture of my classroom here at this posted entry:

And then you can check out this entry for a peek at the interior... where childish laughter still shakes the walls every once in awhile! I like to think the passion is still alive in this grey old building...

The building is kind of like me, though. I'm washed out and grey on the outside, and lively and passionate on the inside. I hope you are not feeling the grey you describe. If you are, may you soon feel red and yellow and orange in your life very soon!

Hi Scheria,
I liked your poem. I always think that empty houses, which are run down look sad and washed out. But they are also full of promise - think of all those secrets that they could tell, and there is something lovely about seeing an old house restored to its former glory so that it can witness love, life and happiness again. Well written!
Kate.

I loved your poem, however when I see an abandoned house I attribute all those things you say is lost to it.  I can see happy times from the past there better than I can looking at a house in use today.  This poem really makes me want to be sure all those things you mention are present in my own home.
